Steven M. Schroeder | Albuquerque, NM
Steve has been a dedicated member of the Friends since 1989 and served on the Board of Directors during the organization’s formative years. His volunteer work has focused extensively on Cumbres Pass, where he helped stabilize and preserve key historic structures. This long involvement reflects his belief in the essential role volunteers play in safeguarding historic resources for future generations. Preservation became a family tradition as well, with his wife and all three children participating in work sessions over the years.
He also strengthened the organization’s communications capacity through his service as Assistant Editor of the C&TS Dispatch, guiding the publication from typewriter and paste-up production into modern desktop publishing.
A long-time advocate for historic preservation, Steve has supported multiple efforts to protect New Mexico’s cultural and industrial heritage. In addition to his work with the Friends, he is actively involved in the community initiative to preserve the historic Santa Fe Railway Shops in Albuquerque.
Born in Chicago, Steve holds a B.S. in Design from the Illinois Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. from Loyola University of Chicago. He relocated to New Mexico in 1979, where he built a 40-year career as an investment consultant and Certified Financial Planner before retiring in 2021. He continues to support preservation initiatives that advance public understanding of regional history and cultural resources.
Steve’s background in historic preservation and nonprofit operations gives him a practical, hands-on approach grounded in clear communication, steady follow-through, and effective systems that help organizations function well. As treasurer, Steve brings a clear, accountable approach to financial oversight, helping both the board and the membership stay fully informed about how the organization’s resources are managed.
