Discover the Legacy of the Chama Train

The Chama train isn’t just a scenic ride—it's a journey through time. Built in the 1880s, this narrow-gauge railroad remains one of the last of its kind in the country. Departing from the charming town of Chama, the train winds through 64 miles of untouched wilderness, climbing to the 10,015-foot Cumbres Pass and descending into the high desert of Antonito, Colorado. FRIENDS of the Cumbres & Toltec work tirelessly to keep this remarkable route alive for future generations, and we invite you to be part of this living history.

Through hands-on preservation work, educational programs, and heritage rail events, we help keep the Chama train an authentic window into the past. Each year, we offer work sessions and behind-the-scenes tours where you can get closer to the history of the Chama train.
